Chapter One:
-Ariel's POV-
Ariel's day started out like any other, blue. The water was a clear blue and Ariel's bedroom was decorated with beautiful pieces of the ocean. Her favorite piece was a piece conch shell that had been given to her by her daddy for her tenth birthday. It had been the first piece of a collection she later started. Somehow these shells would make sounds that Ariel could only dream of hearing in her cramped castle.
"Ariel," her eldest sister, Attina, peeked into Ariel's bedroom. Ariel looked over with grogilly eyes, "Father wants us down in the dining hall in five minutes." With a sigh Ariel took off her sleeper shirt and put on her lucky seashells as her sister swam out. to her left there was a mirror and a green ribbon to put her hair up. Her sisters had begun to bug her about how she kept her hair down, and to please them she decided to keep her hair back. Not that she liked it though.
As she swam toward her bedroom entrance her sister Arista rushed passed her, "Oh, gosh sorry Ariel! I'm just sooo excited. I heard that tonight you get to go up to the surface!" At the age of 14 every daughter of Triton got to go up to the surface for one night, as long as we stayed away from the humans. Tomorrow would be Ariel's birthday, and for being as curious as she was.. she wasn't sure it excited her that much. Ariel watched as her blond sister swam towards the dining hall. Breakfast would be a big long lecture from her dad, and her sister Attina.
"Is it so bad to want more out of life?" Ariel whispered under her breath.
"Cheer up Ariel," Ariel spun around to see a blue and yellow fish swimming around her. Her one true friend.
Ariel hugged her friend and giigled. "Oh, Flounder," She stopped, "What are you doing here?
Flounder gave her a look of 'what do you think' and then looked around,"I found the most amazing thing above the sea level." Ariel sighed and swam with a look of contemt. Was anyone going to stop reminding her about the surface trip. Flounder continued to speak, "There's this island and a bunch of beautiful colors-"
The young mermaid had zoned out the words. Some peace and quiet would be nice about now. As she reached the dining hall the loud voices of her sisters made Ariel's head ache. Flounder went to hide in the kelp plant in the corner.
"My hair is just too gorgeous to be this messing, it's a living nightmare!"
"Oh, Alana you look gorgeous don't go stressing about it."
"And then there were tons of clownfish!"
"Oooo, Andrina, were there any boys with you?"
"Nope, but the fish sure liked to swim!"
Ariel sat down at the end of the table and began to twirl the breakfast around with the eating shell. All of her sisters except for Arista went silent. Attina gave Arista a harsh look while King Triton looked over at his youngest daughter, "Ariel, is everything all right?" Ariel looked up at her father, and he rest of her sisters' faces. She shook her head and gave a lopsided grin. Here is comes. "Then Ariel, tonight you get to go up to the surface. Be careful, and stay away from the humans. They're dangerous."
"I know Daddy," Ariel looked around, "I'll have Flounder with me." Her father gave a sigh while Attina shook her head. Father like daughter in the 'stick-by-the'rules kind of way.' "I'll be fine Daddy." Ariel looked around and stuffed the last piece of her fiood into her mouth. "Ma-I-bay-exhusted?"
"Ariel, what have I said about talking with food in your mouth?" her father scolded witha shake of his head.
The youngest daughter swallowed the rest of her grub and repeated her reques, "May I be excused. I want to be ready for tonight, you know... there's no room for any, um, mistakes."
Her father waved his hand at Ariel for her to leave. The other sisters looked at their father with eagerness, "Go, go. Just be ready for your lessons for today," Ariel stopped with a small grimace on her face. She had totally forgotten about the lessons. "Sabastian was most unpleased about your absience yesterday, Ariel." The other daughters, except for Attina rushed off towards their bedrooms.
"Don't worry Daddy," Ariel went over annd kissed Triton on the cheek, "I won't forget today." Not today where she would do anything to not be bothered and lectured about tonight. If it was too dangerous to go on the surface then why were there rules for and against going up there. Actually that made her wonderr, what was so bad about the surface other than the humans? She swam off again before she could be stopped. Flounder had scurried up behind her. "I just don't get what all the excitement is about this. It's such a contridiction. I mean we can do this, but we can't do this, and we can to that, but not a chance can we do that. What's with all these rules?"
"Oh, Ariel, there has to be some reason for it. You're father is the king of the sea for one thing there has to be some reasons for what rules he puts in," the fish spun around in an excited way.
Ariel had to laugh a bit at that one, "Says the fish who was going against the no music rule when i met him." Flounder stuck his tongue out and Ariel stuck her's back at him. The mermaid swam out of the castle and out into the underwater city that her father ruled. It wasn't where she was going though. Out just a bit of the city's perimater was a cave covered by a cicular rock. Ariel pushed it to the side as Flounder snuck in. She managed to close it up behind her as she gave a relieved sigh, no one had seen her. Inside here were a bunch of gizmos and gajets that she had never seen before. Ariel wasn't quite sure where some of the stuff had come from, but she found the objects to be quite intriguing.
The young mermaid swam over to Flounder who was swimming around an object that showed a duplicate image of himself. It looked like the mirros around her home except for the embedded gold colored images around the sides. "Ariell, why is it that these things intrigue you so much?"
"I'm not sure Flounder," Ariel said while picking up a gray handled object with a circular end. She pulled the back of it back and shot it into a wall that hit a piece of rock. "Watch out!"
It banged from side to side until it hit an object that blew up into a bunch of dark gray smoke. In aloud coughing fit Ariel began to move her arms from side to side. The smoke evaporated into small ink like droplets around the floor. "Ariel are you okay?" Flounder's voice said in a hollow, echo voice. He haad gotten himself stuck in large bowl like container.
Ariel swam over and pulled Flounder out of the oversized bowl which then fell and broke in millions of pieces. "Oh Flounder. Yiou silly urchin," The mermaid wrapped her arms around the little fish and wiggled his fins. As she looked up she was blinded by the surface light, "Ouch." She looked up while covering her hand about her eyes for some chielding. The blast had managed to make hole in the cieling of her hideout. She had never before realized how close the ceiling of the cave was to the surface. It left a rather pretty light that shined on the odd mirror. "Flounder look."
The mirror reflected the light in beam that hit a crystal ball object. That object reflected off the colors that reminded her of her sisters' tail. "What is it?" Flounder said from over Ariel's shoulder.
"I don't know," Ariel swam over and picked up the ball. The colorful reflection suddenly went away. She then put the ball back where it sat and the colors returned. "This is neat I mean-" a loud chime went off from the city. "Oh no my lessons with Sebastian!" Ariel pushed open the door and swam out towards Atlantica.
Had she stopped to turn she would have seen a leather pouch fall through the ceiling's hole and into the cave from the surface.
